Understanding migraines

Acupuncture care for migraines, guided by Dr. Tsai

Migraines and chronic headaches often stem from a mix of stress, muscle tension, hormonal shifts and nervous system sensitivity. Left unaddressed, the pattern tends to repeat - the same triggers producing the same attacks.

Dr. Tsai uses Traditional Chinese Medicine principles to identify the energy imbalance behind your migraines, then builds a plan aimed at reducing how often they happen - not only easing the pain once it starts.

Our process

Five steps to relief

Backed by science and tradition

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, migraines are often linked to Liver Qi stagnation or rising energy that disturbs the head - patterns tied to stress, poor sleep and hormonal shifts.

Modern research shows acupuncture can trigger endorphin release, regulate neurotransmitters involved in pain signaling, and calm an overactive nervous system - mechanisms that help explain why attacks can become less frequent and less severe.

How many sessions will I need for migraines?

Many patients begin to notice improvement after 2-3 sessions. For chronic or frequent migraines, 6-10 treatments are typically recommended before reassessing your plan.

Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very thin - about the width of a human hair. Most people barely feel them, and many find the sessions relaxing.
Can acupuncture actually prevent future migraines, not just treat one that has started?
Yes. The goal of a full treatment plan is to reduce the frequency, duration and intensity of future attacks, not only to ease pain once a migraine begins.
Is acupuncture safe to use alongside my migraine medication?
Acupuncture is commonly used alongside prescribed migraine medication. Tell Dr. Tsai what you are currently taking so your plan can be coordinated with your prescribing doctor.
Are there side effects?
Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. Some patients notice mild bruising at a needle site or temporary fatigue after a session.
What should I expect the night after a session?
Many patients report better sleep and reduced muscle tension in the neck and shoulders the night of treatment - both of which can help lower the odds of an attack.
