Understanding back pain

Acupuncture care for back pain, guided by Dr. Tsai

Back pain is one of the most common health problems today. It can stem from muscle strain, poor posture, stress, a herniated disc or an old injury - and it affects nearly every part of daily life, from sitting at a desk to sleeping through the night.

At Advanced Acupuncture, Dr. Tsai treats the root cause rather than masking the symptom. Fine, sterile needles placed at strategic points help restore circulation, calm inflammation and release the body's own pain-relieving chemistry - no drugs, no surgery.

Our process

Five steps to relief

Backed by science and tradition

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, back pain reflects a blockage of Qi - the body's vital energy - combined with poor circulation of blood along the spine and surrounding muscles.

Modern research points to the same result through a different lens: acupuncture needling triggers the release of endorphins, improves local blood flow and helps calm an overactive nervous system, all of which ease muscular and nerve-related back pain.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need for back pain?

It depends on how long you have had the pain:

  • Acute or recent pain: 2-4 sessions may bring noticeable relief
  • Chronic pain: 6-12 sessions are typically recommended
  • Maintenance: monthly or bi-monthly visits help prevent recurrence
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel little to no pain. The needles are extremely thin - about the width of a human hair - and are placed by a licensed acupuncture physician using sterile, single-use needles.
How soon will I feel relief?

Mild pain often eases after 1-2 treatments. Moderate to chronic pain typically responds within 3-6 treatments, though everyone heals at a different pace.

Is acupuncture safe if I have a herniated or bulging disc?
Acupuncture is commonly used alongside conventional care for disc-related pain. Dr. Tsai reviews your imaging and history first and will refer you back to your physician if your case needs additional workup.
Can acupuncture replace my pain medication?
For many patients, acupuncture reduces how much pain medication they need over time by treating the underlying muscle tension, inflammation and nerve irritation - but any medication changes should be made together with your prescribing doctor.
Do you accept insurance for back pain treatment?
We accept most major insurance plans. Call (954) 987-6988 and our team will help verify your coverage before your first visit.
