A visit to my cardiologist revealed that I would need surgery to clear my carotid arteries. I was to return in 6 weeks for a second ultrasound and at that time if my carotid arteries had remained the same, I would need surgery. I would like you to know what wonderful people you have working for and with you. I’d been in pain (upper arms) for approximately five weeks (due to fibromyalgia, a rheumatic condition.) I knew that if I went to a Rheumatologist I would have been prescribed steroids and pain medication and this is not what I wanted. After the initial treatments in acupuncture, we discussed diet and exercise. I gave up all stimulants: coffee, soda, wine. Within a few treatments I began to feel better. For most of the past 23 years I have been treated for degenerative disc disease manifesting itself as BACK PAIN. Most of my problem is L4-L5 and below for those of you who track those things. I have been treated with massive amounts of anti-inflamatories, muscle relaxants, narcotics, and steroids. In fact, doctors gave me so much of these drugs that they destroyed my immune system and I was once checked into the hospital with Zero white count. They put me in the oncology ward. The cancer ward. and they began to type me for bone marrow transplants. I checked myself back out of there and years later the doctors confessed that the drugs may have been causing the problem. I didn't have cancer.
A few months later I checked into another hospital because I could no longer walk, my legs lost their strength and were going numb. My shoes fell off when I walked up the stairs. After the mylogram, the CAT scan and the MRI, the new doctor (thankfully) sent me home. The damage and injury were so close to the spinal cord that he gave the surgery a 50% chance of paralyzing me.
I had the series of spinal injections which were experimental back then and they allowed me to gently exercise myself back to health. That was 10 years ago.
I have been through all of the stretching and physical therapy exercises and I am meticulous about keeping up with daily stretching and exercise. Did I mention that I am 56 and also have arthritic joints? I kayak up to 15 miles a day. I hike up to 15 miles a day, sometimes in the mountains. I ride my bike for 20-30 miles, usually off road. This is the stuff that keeps my back healthy.
And somewhere, something went wrong. The degeneration of discs continued. The new MRI showed things like bulging discs, marrow changes, dural sac deformity, annular tear, desiccation, and retrolisthesis. The Neuro doctor summed it up with "your nerve is shredded" while offering all of the old drugs and steroids again.
This time the narcotics, muscle relaxants, etc., were just masking the pain-and not doing a very good job of it. Any exercise was excruciating. The pain was so bad that I couldn't limp around in my own house without a cane. Sometime I just couldn't get up from a sitting position. I tried everything-gentle exercise, hot tub, heat, massage, sauna, and visualization. Nothing caused improvement. I just kept getting worse. I lost half the strength of my left leg. And I was scared.
I could find no one who knew anything about acupuncture. I knew of no acupuncturist. But one miserable Sunday I saw an ad in the newspaper and decided to contact this doctor for an evaluation. I was close to clinical depression from the pain.
We shouldn't have to choose a doctor or treatment from the newspaper ads and that is why I am writing this, for you. I want to tell you that it worked for me, what improvements I felt, and about the kind and caring Dr. Jason Tsai who treated me with acupuncture.
I first became aware of acupuncture in the 70's, like most. I don't know how it works, but the scientific research suggests that it does. I only knew that I needed to treat the CAUSE of my pain for a long-term result. I decided to treat my back problem (bulging discs) and my back pain with acupuncture. Throughout the treatment I never doubted that it would help me. I just didn't know how much or for how long.
The Results of 7 Acupuncture Treatments
First, I will compliment myself in knowing exactly "where it hurt" so the doctor could treat those painful places as well as the source of that pain which he determined. I verbally gave him my history without benefit of X-ray or MRI.
He regularly took my pulse, asked to see my tongue, watched me move about and walk. He asked after my digestion and my kidneys, commented on my circulation, etc. And during 7 treatments he inserted about a dozen of his tiny treatment implements into my body. I hesitate to call these needles because insertion is virtually pain free. He then attached them to a machine that caused those sites to feel impulses like thumping or buzzing. Again, not painful.
He used some other machines too-but these were not invasive. In one case I held metal handles. In another case "speakers" were aimed at my back. I never asked about those machines. We had developed a level of trust and I trusted that this kind and spiritual man, educated in both chiropractic and acupuncture was using all of his skills to help me.
After 5 treatments, I judged that I had a 50% improvement in pain and mobility.
I repeat, my pain was cut in half and I had better use of my legs. The numbness started to go away. My lurching gait changed to a limp and finally I was able to walk upright, a little stiff, but I was walking. I even managed to walk a couple of blocks for exercise.
Just before the 7th treatment, I gave him the MRI's. They just confirmed that he was doing the right thing. He was treating all of the problems that were painfully obvious on the films.
After the 7th treatment, I am about 75% better. No more pain pills, muscle relaxants, etc. I just take an anti-inflamatory. I continue the gentle exercise and continue the improvement. I have decided to continue the treatment.
I still don't know how Acupuncture works. I still don't know how long it will work.
But I know it does work. And it works well. And if you have exhausted the sources of acceptable treatments and taken about as many pills as you can stand-and have almost given up hope of pain relief, please talk with Dr. Tsai. I cannot speak for other Acupuncturists or treatments, but Dr. Tsai relieves pain. Acupuncture, when administered by him, works.
Since I didn't have anyone to ask, and since I didn't have anyone to tell me about his or her acupuncture experiences, I am writing this for you.
After another 5 treatments I'll tell you how I feel.
